Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary

Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary, spread across the districts of Angul and Nayagarh in Odisha, is one of the most scenic and ecologically rich destinations in eastern India. The sanctuary derives its name from the magnificent gorge formed by the Mahanadi River, stretching approximately 22 kilometers ‘Satkosia’ meaning ‘seven kos’. This dramatic landscape carved through the Eastern Ghats features lush forests, rugged hills, and a serene river flowing through the valley, creating a breathtaking natural setting. The sanctuary is part of the Satkosia Tiger Reserve and plays a crucial role in preserving diverse wildlife including elephants, leopards, sambar, spotted deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species. It is also an important conservation zone for gharials and mugger crocodiles along the Mahanadi River, making it ecologically significant for both terrestrial and aquatic life. The forest is predominantly tropical deciduous with sal, teak, and bamboo trees supporting a rich ecosystem. Visitors can experience eco-tourism activities such as jungle safaris, trekking, river boating, and camping. Eco-camps like Tikarpada and Badmul provide nature-based stays with opportunities for birdwatching, bonfires, and guided walks. The panoramic views of the gorge, especially during sunrise and sunset, are visually captivating and attract photographers and nature lovers. The peaceful and unspoiled environment offers a perfect escape from urban life. The surrounding tribal communities add cultural richness to the region, allowing visitors to experience traditional lifestyles and local practices. Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique destination where river, forest, wildlife, and culture come together to create an immersive and refreshing travel experience in Odisha.
