ODISHA
Stone temples designed as sacred geometry in motion.
Kalinga Temple Architecture is the distinctive temple-building tradition that evolved in ancient Kalinga (present-day Odisha). Developed between the 6th and 16th centuries CE, it represents a refined architectural system where structure, sculpture, and symbolism function together according to the Vastu-Purusha Mandala. These temples are not only places of worship but cosmic diagrams expressed in stone, reflecting both spiritual philosophy and advanced engineering knowledge.

Kalinga temples follow a clear axial plan — the sanctum (Deula) aligned with the prayer hall (Jagamohana), later expanded with dance halls and offering chambers. Every form and carving follows sacred proportion, making architecture an integral part of ritual practice. These complexes functioned as centers of worship, performance, and learning.
Kalinga architecture is identified by three principal temple tower forms:
- Rekha Deula: A tall curvilinear spire symbolizing the celestial mountain, seen in the Lingaraj Temple.
- Pidha Deula: A stepped pyramidal structure used for assembly halls, as in the Konark Sun Temple.
- Khakhara Deula: A wagon-vaulted form typically associated with goddess shrines, exemplified by the Vaital Deula.
