Sital Sasthi is one of Western Odisha's grandest festivals, celebrating the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parbati. With a history spanning over three centuries, the festival transforms Sambalpur into a vibrant cultural stage, where devotional rituals, spectacular processions, and folk traditions come together in a magnificent celebration of faith and community. Dating back to 1679, Sital Sasthi is Odisha's second-oldest major religious procession after the Ratha Jatra. The unique tradition allows ordinary families to assume the role of the bride's parents and perform the Kanyadan of Goddess Parbati to Lord Shiva, making devotees an integral part of the divine wedding. Celebrated over several days, the festival features elaborate wedding rituals, dazzling processions, beautifully decorated tableaux, and performances by over 10,000 artistes representing diverse folk and classical traditions from across India. Today, more than 20 localities in Sambalpur organise their own processions, drawing lakhs of devotees and earning the festival the reputation of being the "Mahakumbh of Artistes."

Held annually in Baragada, Dhanu Jatra is an extraordinary 11-day theatrical festival and is recognised as the world's largest open-air theatre. During the festival, the entire town transforms into the mythological kingdom of Mathura, with Baragada becoming the capital of King Kansa and the nearby village of Ambapali representing Gopapura (Gokul). Through elaborate processions, dramatic performances and community participation, the festival recreates the legendary tales of Lord Krishna and his tyrannical uncle, King Kansa, culminating in Kansa's defeat on the final day.
