Satkosia Gorge & Tiger Reserve
Satkosia Tiger Reserve spanning the districts of Anugola and Nayagada is one of eastern India’s most scenic and ecologically significant landscapes. Named after the spectacular 22km gorge carved by the Mahanadi River (‘Satkosia’ meaning seven kos) the reserve is defined by its dramatic terrain of forested hills, deep valleys and a tranquil river flowing through the Eastern Ghats. This biodiverse habitat supports a wide range of wildlife including elephants, leopards, sambar, spotted deer, wild boar and rich birdlife. It also serves as an important conservation zone for gharials and mugger crocodiles along the Mahanadi highlighting its ecological importance for both terrestrial and aquatic species. The forests dominated by sal, teak and bamboo further enrich this thriving ecosystem. Satkosia offers immersive eco-tourism experiences such as jungle safaris, trekking, river boating and nature-based camping. Eco-camps at Tikarpada, Chhotkei and Baghamunda provide comfortable stays with opportunities for birdwatching, guided walks and riverside experiences. With its unspoiled surroundings, panoramic gorge views and the presence of indigenous communities, Satkosia presents a unique blend of nature, wildlife and culture ideal for those seeking a serene and meaningful escape.
