Similipal National Park
Spread across 2,750 sq km the Similipal Tiger Reserve is one of India’s richest biodiversity landscapes and Odisha’s largest protected area. Entering from Jashipur the reserve unfolds into undulating plateaus, dense sal forests and river valleys with peaks like Khairiburu and Meghashini rising to over 1,500 metres. Once the royal hunting grounds of the Mayurbhanj rulers, Similipal is now a key tiger habitat under Project Tiger and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is globally known for its rare melanistic (black) tigers and the legendary Tigress Khairi, along with elephants, gaurs, leopards and over 300 species of birds. The forests here range from moist deciduous to semi evergreen patches, with over 1,000 plant species including 94 Species of orchids and centuries old Sal Trees. Adding to the experience are spectacular waterfalls like Barehipani and Joranda best seen after the monsoon and a vibrant tribal landscape where communities have coexisted with nature for generations. With wildlife, waterfalls, birding and culture all in one frame, Similipal offers a raw immersive escape into Odisha’s wild side.
