Mandiramalini: Where Rivers, Rituals & Timeless Faith Converge
Discover the Heritage

About the Destination

Nestled at the sacred confluence of the Mahanadi and Tel rivers, Sonpur revered as Mandiramalini (the city garlanded with temples) is one of Odisha’s most spiritually immersive destinations, often regarded as the second Varanasi of India. With over a hundred temples dotting its landscape, the town resonates with devotion and layered history, anchored by sites like Rameswar Temple and the island shrine of Lankeswari Temple. Its cultural significance is further elevated by Patali Srikhetra a revered Jagannath site believed to have sheltered the deities during turbulent times and the spiritual legacy of Bhima Bhoi at Khaliapali. Beyond its sacred aura, Sonpur is emerging as a tranquil birding destination along its riverbanks, while also preserving the rich tradition of Sambalpuri handloom. Blending spirituality, folklore, and natural beauty, Sonpur offers a deeply contemplative travel experience in Western Odisha.
