Raghurajpur Craft Village

"Raghurajpur Heritage Village, located just 14 km from Puri in Odisha, is a unique cultural destination that shows the state’s rich artistic traditions. Recognized as India’s first heritage crafts village, Raghurajpur is famous for its Pattachitra paintings, a traditional art form known for intricate details, mythological themes, and vibrant natural colors. The village is home to skilled artisans, many of whom have received national and international recognition for their craftsmanship. What makes Raghurajpur truly special is that almost every household in the village is engaged in some form of traditional art, making it a living museum of culture and creativity. Apart from Pattachitra, artisans here also practice other art forms such as palm leaf engraving (Tala Pattachitra), stone carving, wooden toys, and masks. The village is also known for its traditional Gotipua dance performances. The walls of the houses are beautifully painted with murals depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, adding to the visual charm of the village.
Raghurajpur is also the birthplace of the famous Odissi dancer Padma Vibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra and the traditional Gotipua dancer Padma Shri Guru Maguni Charan Das, further enhancing its cultural importance. Visitors can walk through the narrow lanes, interact with artisans, and witness the process of creating traditional artworks. The village offers a peaceful and authentic experience, away from urban chaos. It also provides an opportunity to purchase handmade crafts directly from the artists, supporting local livelihoods. Cultural performances, especially Gotipua dance, are occasionally organized for visitors, giving insight into Odisha’s performing arts. Raghurajpur stands as a perfect example of how traditional art and culture can be preserved and promoted through community efforts, making it a must-visit destination for art lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and tourists exploring Odisha."
