With a history spanning over three centuries, the festival transforms Sambalpur into a vibrant cultural stage, where devotional rituals, spectacular processions, and folk traditions come together in a magnificent celebration of faith and community.
Dating back to 1679, Sital Sasthi is Odisha's second-oldest major religious procession after the Ratha Jatra. The unique tradition allows ordinary families to assume the role of the bride's parents and perform the Kanyadan of Goddess Parbati to Lord Shiva, making devotees an integral part of the divine wedding. Celebrated over several days, the festival features elaborate wedding rituals, dazzling processions, beautifully decorated tableaux, and performances by over 10,000 artistes representing diverse folk and classical traditions from across India. Today, more than 20 localities in Sambalpur organise their own processions, drawing lakhs of devotees and earning the festival the reputation of being the "Mahakumbh of Artistes."
