Biraja Temple
"At the heart of Jajpur lies Biraja Temple, one of Odisha’s most revered Shakti shrines, dedicated to Goddess Biraja a powerful form of Durga. Steeped in centuries of devotion, the temple remains a living centre of faith where ancient rituals continue with deep reverence. What sets Biraja apart is its distinctive idol the goddess is depicted in a rare two-armed form, calmly subduing Mahishasura with a spear, offering a unique expression of divine strength and grace. During the 9th-century Bhaumakara period, the shrine also drew Tantric Buddhist practitioners, who worshipped the deity as Prajnaparamita, reflecting a rich syncretic heritage.
The Biraja Temple, located in Jajpur, Odisha (125 km north of Bhubaneswar), is one of the 18 highly revered Maha Shakti Peethas. The temple complex is highly significant for Pind Daan (ancestor worship rites). It is believed to be the exact spot where the navel of Goddess Sati fell.
A highlight is the Biraja Ratha Jatra during Dussehra, when the goddess rides the chariot Singhadhwaja and tours the town, bringing the divine closer to the people.
Blending Shaktism, Tantra, ritual, and living tradition, Biraja Temple offers a deeply immersive spiritual experience rooted in Odisha’s sacred legacy"
